The latest in DJI technological brilliance, the Mavic 2 Pro features a Hasselblad L1D-20c camera, setting the highest possible standards for a consumer camera drone. With the Hasselblad Natural Colour Solution (HNCS), the Mavic 2 Pro is able to deliver stunning colors and film-like quality straight from the camera lens. In this guide, we dive beyond the lens to discover more about color and HNCS and resurface with informative Mavic 2 photo comparisons.
Capturing Color on Camera
Welcome to the art of aerial photography, where color and tone underpin the creative boundaries of expression. For users who demand the very best from their photography, the following information helps paint a bigger picture.
Before we dive in, in order to get a better understanding of pixel size and sensitivity, we recommend having a quick read of everything you should know about drone camera settings. Now that you have got your feet wet, let’s get started!
Tonality is controlled by the following factors:
- Dynamic range
- A/D conversion process
- Applied color profiles
An A/D converter is a genius little system that is able to convert an analog signal into a digital signal. The digital signal is then transferred to a microprocessor, which then transforms the signal into image data. Here comes the magic — while most digital cameras are able to process 8-bit color data, the Mavic 2 is able to process 10-bit color data, recording up to 1 billion colors.*
*Photo color depth: JPG: 8-bit; RAW: 16-bit. Video color depth: DLog-M & HDR video: 10-bit; SDR video: 8-bit.
With the Mavic 2 Pro, DJI and Hasselblad have ventured to discover new depths of image quality, redefining the capabilities of consumer drones. The HNCS unique color profile was developed for users who demand extreme color accuracy. Now you can enjoy more sophisticated tonal transitions and film-like quality.
How Does HNCS Work?
HNCS delivers a one-profile solution for impeccable color accuracy. The following list explains the key aspects of this technology:
A brand new color look-up-table (LUT)
In pursuit of photographic perfection, Hasselblad produced a new color look-up-table (LUT) that uses a unique renditioning of colors. The following photo is an example of the new LUT in action.
The Hasselblad L*RGB profile
Hasselblad has improved the algorithms, CMOS sensitivity, and filter characteristics to create the HNCS Hasselblad L*RGB profile. This new profile has a wider color range and is capable of capturing intricate details and stunning contrast levels.
Universal Profile
Sacrificing image colors is a pesky situation far too familiar with many photographers. In order to combat this problem, many photographers have to use several profiles for different types of creative work, making this whole process rather cumbersome. With HNCS, Hasselblad has directly tackled this issue and created a universal profile that simplifies this process for the photographer.
Optimal Contrast
Hasselblad implements a “film curve” technique which is used to optimize contrast levels. Combined with the Hasselblad RGB input profile, this technique delivers better contrast between the dark and highlighted regions in an image.
Color Matching
The HNCS eliminates the need to use several profiles to accurately obtain a natural color profile. The techniques utilized in this technology allow you to consistently capture colors, similar to what the human eye can see.

Mavic 2 Pro: Photo Comparisons
Now you know the details. It’s time to see the HNCS in action! The picture comparisons below are shot from the Mavic 2 Pro, Mavic 2 Zoom, and the Mavic Pro. All the images are unedited JPG photos taken at the same time and place.* In order to obtain optimum exposure settings on the different drone models, all images have been taken using different shutter speeds and aperture settings, as captioned in the image.
* The photos below have been compressed when they were uploaded; this comparison is for reference only.
From the above comparisons, the Mavic 2 Pro photos are vibrant, clear, and display pure colors. The images featuring HNCS produce the most natural colors possible, and details are perceptually correct at 5x zoom!
