5 Great Travel Drones for Your Next Vacation

The amount of fun you’ll have flying a drone is largely contingent on where you fly. For example, flying inside your own home, you’ll have much less fun than you would flying outside. And when you fly outside, the more compelling your surroundings are, the more fun you’ll have exploring, photographing, and filming the area.

Many people purchase a camera drone just so they can fly it while traveling, which is a perfectly rational decision. Traveling is all about seeking out and going to beautiful and exciting places, and seeing these places from the air can be truly exhilarating. In this article, we’ll profile five drones that are ideal for travel.

Mavic 2

The DJI Mavic 2 Pro and Mavic 2 Zoom are sleek additions to the Mavic series, allowing you to capture high-quality images with ease. Foldable and portable, the Mavic 2 Pro and Zoom are both fantastic choices for your next vacation. Both come with solid, wind-resistant gimbals to ensure that your shots are always smooth and stable. Both offer up to 8 km of 1080p transmission, Omnidirectional Obstacle Sensing, and quieter flight. With a max flight time of 21 minutes and a max speed of 72 kph, fly faster and farther than ever before, capturing memories you will cherish for years to come.

Co-engineered in partnership with Hasselblad, the Mavic 2 Pro features the all-new Hasselblad L1D-20c camera. The excellent image quality and higher color depth make it perfect for shooting natural landscapes and cities.

The Mavic 2 Zoom has a 1/2.3-inch 12MP sensor with 2x optical zoom, allowing you to get those perfect shots at a safe and relaxed distance. The Dolly Zoom QuickShot is also a great feature to use if your vacation location offers you the opportunity to capture ceremonies, animals, or sporting events.

You no longer need to worry about remembering your brief escape from reality; the Mavic 2 Pro and Mavic 2 Zoom will ensure you have professional-quality images and videos to reminisce over years down the road.

Mavic Air Check the Price!

A marvel of engineering and design, the Mavic Air was built to go wherever adventure takes you. Similar to the Mavic Pro with its compact and foldable design, the Mavic Air is about half the size of the Mavic Pro with added vision sensors on its back, SmartCapture mode, QuickShots like Asteroid, and 8 GB of internal storage (in addition to a microSD card slot). Its max flight time is a bit less than the Mavic Pro at 21 minutes, but the Mavic Air is still DJI’s most portable drone to date with a 3-axis 4K gimbal camera, making it an excellent travel drone.

Spark Check the Price!

Spark, DJI’s smallest drone yet, is simply fun to fly. Unlike other DJI drones, Spark was designed to be hand launched, and new advanced gesture controls mean you can fly with nothing but simple arm movements.  When you’re on the go, there’s no easier way to snap an aerial selfie.

Say you’ve just summited a mountain you’re climbing on vacation, and you want to capture the moment. Pull Spark out of your bag, turn the drone on, and tap the power button twice with the camera facing you. Spark will take off from your hand when it recognizes your face and wait for your next command. Using gestures, you can record a video or snap a selfie without using a smartphone or controller.

And even though Spark is small, its power isn’t compromised. It features a 2-axis gimbal, a 12MP camera, and exclusive shooting modes like Pano, ShallowFocus, and QuickShot. QuickShot mode lets you fly along preset flight paths while the camera tracks you, which is a quick and easy way to capture epic sharable travel videos.

Mavic Pro Check the Price!

The Mavic Pro is compact, powerful, and the perfect travel companion. Though its camera isn’t quite as good as the Phantom 4 Pro’s, it still shoots 4K video and has a 3-axis gimbal, so your shots are always stable. It was released about a year ago, and there is still no other drone in its class that boasts similar flight and camera performance.

It flies so stably that you can even shoot long exposure shots at night.  This is perfect for photographing cityscapes or traffic in motion, which can produce great light trails. And, last but not least, a single battery lets you fly for up to 27 minutes. Or, if you purchase the all-new Platinum edition, you can fly for up to 30 minutes.

Phantom 4 Pro Check the Price!

The DJI Phantom is perhaps the company’s most iconic drone. You can’t go wrong with this quadcopter, which features a camera with a 1” CMOS sensor, five directions of obstacle sensing, and Intelligent Flight Modes like ActiveTrack, Draw, and TapFly.

It weighs 3 lbs (1.388 kg), which isn’t much considering how much power it’s packing. But unlike some other drones, it doesn’t fold down to take up less space. If you’re heading out on long treks, you’ll need a dedicated backpack. Though it is on the larger side, if you’re an exacting photographer or filmmaker and you often rent a car while on vacation, this is an ideal travel drone.

Which travel drone should you choose?

If camera quality is of utmost importance to you, go for the Phantom 4 Pro. If you care about camera quality but want something a bit more portable, go for the Mavic 2 or Mavic Pro. And if portability is most important and you just want something that’s fun and easy to fly, get yourself a Spark.
